How to Help Your Kids Enjoy Their Time on the Water
When I was growing up, I remember my parents introducing me as their little fish! I was swimming and near the water every chance I got. There were trips to my Aunt’s pool, swimming lessons at the base pool when we lived in military housing, or trips to the local lake for vacation. When I got older, there was a bus that took us down to the local beach during the summer or to the place that we could put our tubes in the water and float down the canals. Now, as an adult, I find myself seeking a beach or lake, when I need solitude or need to reconnect to something greater than myself. And when my introspection is over, I dive in the water and remember the joy and freedom of swimming like a fish.
The beauty of my ‘fish’ memories is something I wanted to share with my kids. So when we went to H2O Sports in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina the kids got to experience the joy of the water, just like I did when I was a kid. The best thing I ever did for the kids was to teach them to swim and not to have a fear of the water. But as a responsible adult and to ensure their safety, I had to also teach them to respect the water and the creatures that reside there, just like H2O Sports does.
We started off slow, since my littlest one is the most conservative (and maybe a little apprehensive), and went on one of the H20 Sports Dolphin Cruises, where we were delighted to see the bottlenose dolphins right next to us in the water. It almost seemed like they were playing in the wake of the boat as they followed us around Calibogue Sound. The guide told us all about these funny and playful dolphins, as a pod of them bobbled up and down in the water. They are amazing creatures that seem to have a look in their eye that belies actual emotion and understanding…if only we could communicate with them!
Well the dolphin tour gave us the fever for more water fun, so we decided, by a unanimous vote, to try the Banana Boat Ride that H2O Sports offers. So we suited up in life jackets and the speed boat pulled the Banana Boat thru the islands! All I can tell you is that my stomach hurt from laughing the entire time! The kids got splashed and were screaming in delight. So maybe starting slow with kids is the way to go… It worked at our house with our kids. We had a great day with just two of the many activities that H2O Sports offers.
